How do we explain the church roll phenomenon in America, where there are usually twice as many members as there are attendees at services week after week? The writer of Hebrews explains it quite simply: Many will fail to press on in the faith.
Chapter 6 of Hebrews starts by imploring the Christians to press on to maturity in Christ. What the writer specifically wants are Christians who understand the full life implications of the gospel, not merely Christians who know the ,”Repent and believe” part. As important as repenting and faith are for the Christian, there must be more or there will result a falling away.
“Let us press on… for in the case of those who have once been enlightened… and then have fallen away… it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame.” Those who fail to press on are not aware of the shame they bring to Christ and the church.
