The Bible is full of great promises to those who trust in Jesus Christ. There is one promise, however, that no one seems to want; it is, perhaps, the greatest unappreciated promise in Scripture, and it is found in Hebrews 12:6, The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. No child of God goes without a spanking. I used to think that I was cursed by God because I always “got caught” and “got in trouble,” while many of my friends (and enemies) “got away with” the same sins. I was not cursed at all. Quite the opposite, I was blessed by God with discipline. Now, I marvel at the extent to which God works in order to secure the salvation of his children. I thank God for his disciplining me. He doesn’t discipline everybody. He disciplines those whom he loves.
This assessment is also helpful when seen in light of living the Christian life. I think that there is a beautiful relationship between discipline and faithfulness that we tend to forget. Thanks for the insight.
