The Greatest Promise Not Wanted

The Bible is full of great promises to those who trust in Jesus Christ.  There is one promise, however, that no one seems to want; it is, perhaps, the greatest unappreciated promise in Scripture, and it is found in Hebrews 12:6, The Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.  No child of God goes without a spanking.  I used to think that I was cursed by God because I always “got caught” and “got in trouble,” while many of my friends (and enemies) “got away with” the same sins.  I was not cursed at all.  Quite the opposite, I was blessed by God with discipline.  Now, I marvel at the extent to which God works in order to secure the salvation of his children.  I thank God for his disciplining me.  He doesn’t discipline everybody.  He disciplines those whom he loves.

  1. This assessment is also helpful when seen in light of living the Christian life. I think that there is a beautiful relationship between discipline and faithfulness that we tend to forget. Thanks for the insight.

  2. Thank you, T.C. The discipline of the Lord is good. Hey, shouldn’t you be packing?
